What Is a Doula?
Not too long ago, I wasn’t even sure what a doula was. Now, I can’t imagine dedicating my life to anything else.
Since becoming a postpartum doula, one of the things I’ve realized is that while the word doula is becoming familiar, many people still aren’t exactly sure what we do. Some think doulas deliver babies. Others assume we’re medical professionals or that we’re only there during labor.
The truth is, doula care looks different depending on the type of doula, and every doula brings their own unique approach and skillset.
That’s exactly why I wanted this to be the very first post on my blog.
Doula care is growing and for good reason
As more families seek personalized, relationship-centered support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period, doulas are becoming an increasingly valued part of the care team.
Research has shown that postpartum doula support improves confidence, emotional wellbeing, and adjustment during the transition into life with a baby.
The more people learn about what doulas actually do, the more they realized they don’t have to navigate this season alone.
First things first… what is a doula?!
The formal definition is, “A trained, non-medical professional who provides emotional, physical, educational, and practical support during major life transitions.”
Many people are surprised to learn that there isn’t just one type of doula.
There are:
Birth doulas, who support families during pregnancy, labor, and birth.
Postpartum doulas, who provide care and support mostly after baby arrives (that’s me!).
Full-spectrum doulas, who support families through a wide range of reproductive experiences.
End-of-life (death) doulas, who provide compassionate support to individuals and families during the end-of-life journey.
While each role looks a little different, the heart of doula work is the same: walking alongside people with education, compassion, and unwavering support.
Common misconceptions about doulas
“Doula’s deliver babies.”
Nope!
Birth is attended by your obstetrician or midwife. As a postpartum doula, I don’t attend births at all. Instead, I step in before and mostly after your baby arrives, helping you recover, adjust, and feel supported during the fourth trimester.
“Doulas are medical professionals.”
We are non-medical professionals.
We don’t diagnose, prescribe, or provide clinical care. Instead, we offer evidence-based education, emotional support, practical help, and guidance while working alongside your healthcare providers.
“A postpartum doula is really just there for the baby.”
This is probably the biggest misconception I hear in my line of work.
Yes, I care for your baby, but my primary focus is mom.
I help parents recover from birth, navigate feeding, process their experience, build confidence, get nourishment and rest, care for siblings, answer questions, and create a smoother transition into the wonderful world of parenthood.
When parents are support, babies benefit too.
“Every doula does the same thing.”
Not at all.
Every doula has different training, certifications, philosophies, and specialties. Some focus on just birth. Others, like me, specialize in the postpartum period. Some offer overnight support, lactation education, meal preparation, newborn education, sibling support, or holistic wellness.
Finding the right doula is about finding someone whose support aligns with your families needs.
Why I chose postpartum doula work
The postpartum period is one of the most transformative, and overlooked, times in a family’s life.
While so much attention is given to preparing for birth, very little is spent realistically preparing for what comes after.
That’s where I believe postpartum doulas make such a meaningful difference.
My role isn’t to tell you how to parent. It’s to support you as you discover what feels right for your family, while making sure you feel informed, cared for, and never alone.
Because when we support parents, we strengthen families. When we strengthen families, the whole world becomes a better place
